Analyst Predicts Big Numbers for BioShock Infinite

Will BioShock Infinite sell more copies than any other game in the series before it? At least one analyst is saying yes.

Despite not coming out until next year, analysts are already weighing in on how many units BioShock Infinite will sell, with Mike Hickey of Janco Partners predicting that Irrational will ship nearly five million units of the game at launch.

Writing in a note to investors, Hickey said that the first BioShock shipped 2.2 million copies in its first year, and sold 4 million copies overall. The second game – which was made by 2K Marin, and not Irrational – didn’t fare quite as well, only selling 3 million copies. In his note, Hickey said that he expected Infinite to surpass both games, generating around $221 million in sales.

With so little hard information about BioShock Infinite, Hickey is likely basing a lot of his prediction on the buzz surrounding the game, both from the press, and from members of the public who have seen it at shows like PAX East. I’m not entirely sure how that excitement translates into such a specific number, but then again, I’m not a market analyst.

BioShock Infinite comes out for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 at some point in 2012.
