Arcane, an animated League of Legends series, is coming to Netflix later this year. The streamer debuted an announcement teaser trailer today indicating the series will premiere this fall. Developed and produced by League of Legends developer Riot Games and 3D animation studio Fortiche Productions, the show is set in the universe of the massively popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game and will be Riot’s first television series.
Today’s Netflix teaser isn’t the first time Riot Games has talked about its Arcane animated series. The show was originally announced during the League of Legends 10-year anniversary event in 2019, where the studio showed off even more footage of the series prior to its being confirmed for Netflix. Riot had previously planned to launch the show last year but eventually delayed the project due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Netflix and Riot have provided a brief summary of Arcane: “Set in the utopian region of Piltover and the oppressed underground of Zaun, the story follows the origins of two iconic League champions—and the power that will tear them apart.”
It seems the two champions mentioned are Vi and Jinx, but it wouldn’t be a shock to see more familiar faces from the MOBA show up in Arcane this fall. On the topic of League of Legends’ rich story potential, Riot’s global president of entertainment, Shauna Spenley, had this to say: “Arcane was created as a love letter to our players and fans, who have been asking us for more cinematic experiences that dive deeper into the worlds and champions in League of Legends. Netflix, with its incredible global brand and shared goal of delivering premium, high quality content, is the perfect partner to help us bring Arcane to players around the globe.”
