It’s becoming the year of Zack Snyder… or at least the “Months Beginning with the Letter M” of Zack Snyder. Today Netflix announced that his new film, Army of the Dead, has received a release date of May 21, just two months after the March release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The new film is a zombie/action hybrid about an elite team of criminals who are looking to make a major heist from a casino in Las Vegas before the entire city is nuked because it’s infested with zombies.
The film is a return for Snyder to the genre that busted him into the film world with the stellar remake of Dawn of the Dead. Since then he’s swerved all over the place from superheroes to animated fare, but it looks like he might be stuck on zombies for a long while. The plan with the film is to kick-start a franchise, with an animated prequel series in the works already and no doubt Netflix looking to create a plethora of sequels as long as this one performs well.
Army of the Dead has a massive cast — as films where a bunch of people get eaten by zombies usually do — including Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana De La Reguera, Theo Rossi, Matthias Schweighöfer, Nora Arnezeder, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Garret Dillahunt, Tig Notaro, Raúl Castillo, Huma Qureshi, Samantha Win, Richard Cetrone, and Michael Cassidy. Snyder is directing the film, created the story, and wrote the screenplay alongside Shay Hatten and Joby Harold. He’s also producing with Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller.
Netflix released this new teaser poster for Army of the Dead along with the release date. We will most likely be seeing a trailer soon.
