Black Ops Blows Up UK Launch Records

Not only did Activision’s shooter outsell all games in the UK last week, it made last week the highest grossing in the region’s videogame history.

We know that Call of Duty: Black Ops had a pretty good week. It broke launch day records in both the U.S. and the United Kingdom by grossing a combined $360 million in both regions by selling 5.6 million copies on the first day that it was available. That great day of sales was followed by four more and Black Ops ended the week making £81.9 million (that’s $131.5 million) by selling over 2 million copies in the U.K. alone. That figure beats out Modern Warfare 2 by 13 percent in terms of unit sales and 21 percent in pure earnings.

GFK Chart-Track also reports that last week was the highest grossing in the history of videogames in the UK, with £113.8 million in sales. That figure beat out the previous record-holder at £107.6 million for the last week of sales in 2008 (when Call of Duty: World at War was on shelves.

Of course, Microsoft’s launch of Kinect had something to do with those high numbers, as Kinect Sports, Ubisoft’s Motion Sports and Dance Central were all in the top 15 of highest-grossing titles in the U.K.

Yep, it was a good week for videogames.
