It turns out those rumors about Borderlands 2 weren’t just rumors after all.
Gearbox has officially confirmed the sequel to 2009’s shooter cum gun-statistic-spreadsheet simulator, Borderlands. Yesterday, Gearbox’s head honcho Randy Pitchford responded to gossip and rumors about a potential Borderlands 2, stating that: “We’ve only announced what we’ve announced. If we haven’t announced it, it doesn’t exist.” Turns out that’s not entirely true, Borderlands 2 does exist, and it could be arriving on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC later next year. The title is down for release sometime during publisher 2K Games’ 2013 fiscal year, which actually starts in April 2012.
According to a press release, Borderlands 2 will retain the distinctive cel-shaded look of its predecessor and though the story is still set on Pandora, players will get to explore unvisited regions of the planet, hopefully ones that aren’t deserts. Players can also expect “several” new playable characters with a whole bunch of new skills and, rather obviously, a whole mess of randomly generated guns to choose from. Gearbox has also promised improvements to the series’ story presentation and mission structure.
We’ll get a closer look at Borderlands 2 and its various improvements later this month when Gearbox puts it on display at Gamescom 2011 and PAX Prime.
