Grass grows, birds fly, and Activision announces Call of Duty games – but this one gets back to Black Ops.
It’s that time of year again. You can feel it in the air – that precise point when Activision reveals its new Call of Duty game. But it just wouldn’t be tradition if we got the reveal all at once, oh no. Hence why there’s a teaser trailer preparing everyone for a full announcement of – wait for it – Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.
Black Ops is perhaps the second most popular Call of Duty franchise after Modern Warfare – but is hands-down the most subversive. The original Black Ops followed a Cold War operative suffering from Russian reprogramming as he took part the Bay of Pigs invasion and Vietnam War. The sequel introduced a near-future world where those historical events fueled a future of insurgent terrorism and drone warfare. Where the third game will go from there is anyone’s guess – but the teaser’s tone suggests it will be a grand finale tying everything together.
Black Ops developer Treyarch is also the studio that brought us Call of Duty‘s zombies mode – so you can absolutely expect that will be a feature in the new game.
The trailer itself isn’t much to speak of – just a handful of quotes from previous games over the background of a soldier illuminated with numbers. But after the relatively disappointing responses to Ghosts and Advanced Warfare, maybe letting Treyarch get back to basics is just what Call of Duty needs. We’ll find out more when the official announcement arrives on April 26.
