Can Kinect 2.0 See You Naked Through Your Clothes?

That’s just a wrinkle in his jeans, you perv!

I hate to break it you, folks, but the Xbox One doesn’t care about what’s in your pants. Normally I would have said most people realize that, but apparently the folks at Microsoft feel they need to clarify the point in the wake of rumors suggesting the Xbox One Kinect can detect users’ genitalia, even when they’re wearing clothes.

The statement comes in the wake of a Xbox One Kinect demonstration video released last month, which raised some eyebrows after viewers claimed the sensor was picking the demonstrator’s penis through his pants. In the video, Kinect developer Kareem Choudhry shows off all the details the second-generation Kinect can detect that the original can’t, including a player’s individual fingers, the movements of his facial features and – wait for it – the folds of his clothes. If you look at Mr. Choudry’s pelvic region, there is a fold on his thigh that some viewers have asserted may be the outline of his junk.

In response to those claims, a Microsoft representative told IGN that the image in question is merely a fold in Mr. Choudry’s clothes and that, as powerful as the Kinect is, it cannot see through clothing.

“First, if you watch the video you will see that what is being represented here is a fold in the denim,” said the Microsoft rep. “There is no tech magic going on here and Kinect cannot see through clothing. Furthermore, the video was an illustration of the various camera views available for the creation of games and apps. This view is only accessible on a development kit and is not viewable on retail consoles.”

While the fold is positioned appropriately, it looks similar to the folds on other parts of his pants. It’s a bit of a stretch, even by YouTube commenter standards. Besides, it may be controversial now, but you just know that’s going to be a major selling point of the Kinect 3.
