Charmeleon Meets Deathclaw In Pokémon New Vegas

It was inevitable; A clever modder has merged the virtual worlds of Pokémon and Fallout: New Vegas.

As you can see in the attached video, the Pokémon New Vegas mod gives players the ability to toss Pokéballs in the burned-out wastes of Bethesda Softworks’ open-world roleplaying epic.

As any Pokéfan would expect, these balls, on impact, burst open to reveal one of the mod’s 10 pocket monsters. Granted, for the most part, they’re actually creatures from the Fallout: New Vegas world with aesthetic alterations to bring them closer to Nintendo’s creature line up, but it doesn’t take a huge suspension of disbelief to accept these things as friends.

Once released, the would-be Pokémon function in much the same way as New Vegas’ companions. They follow the player around, occasionally make noises, and attack anything that seems threatening.

The really impressive bit here is that when these creatures attack, the result is far more bombastic than anything you’ll find in Pokémon Black. Yeah, that’s likely the result of the technological limitations of the Nintendo DS, but watching that Charmeleon analogue spew a gout of fire across the carapace of a radscorpion just made me so happy.

Don’t get me wrong, I love laser pistols, power fists and gauss rifles as much as the next Fallout fanboy, but not since the days of the original Dogmeat have I felt this kind of maniacal pride in a Fallout companion. There was real love in that blast of incendiary spit, I could tell.

If you own the PC version of Fallout: New Vegas, the mod’s creator has written up full instructions on how you too can enjoy his creation.
