Looks like Star Trek‘s success on the small screen has finally kicked Paramount into gear with its big-screen efforts. The studio held an investor event today and dropped news bomb after news bomb after news bomb at it, including the fact that it is in talks to bring back the majority of the cast of the Star Trek reboot movie franchise, including Chris Pine, for a new movie.
Paramount executive Brian Robbins and producer J.J. Abrams announced this news but didn’t give details other than that they are working to get the entire bridge crew back. In addition to Chris Pine, this new Star Trek movie would be targeting Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldaña, and John Cho. Of course, Anton Yelchin won’t be returning after his untimely passing.
The film side of Trek has been struggling to get off the ground again after 2016’s underrated Star Trek Beyond. At one point Chris Hemsworth was being courted to return in his role as Kirk’s father, and at another, Quentin Tarantino had a script he wanted to make. It’s been a weird road for a film getting back to the big screen, but with this announcement, it seems the next Trek film could actually hit its scheduled December 22, 2023 release date. If you don’t want to wait that long, remember that some of the best Trek made in decades is on Paramount+ right now.
The studio also released the logo in the header above, which looks basically the same as the logo has been for all the Kelvin timeline films. Stay tuned for more updates on this maybe-Chris Pine-starring new Star Trek movie.
