The Million Dollar Baby director will helm the upcoming musical remake of A Star is Born, with the “Single Ladies” songstress as the titular star.
Singer Beyoncé Knowles has been building up her acting resume, with roles in such films as Dreamgirls, Cadillac Records, and Obsessed. She’s next set to star in a musical remake of A Star is Born, and Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood has just agreed to direct and produce the film for Warner Bros. Eastwood, director of such films as Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, and Gran Torino, will likely start shooting the film in the fall, with a release date sometime in 2012.
This won’t be Eastwood’s first time at the musical rodeo. Once a hopeful music theory major in college, he starred in the 1969 film version of the Lerner and Loewe musical Paint Your Wagon. In recent years has taken the reins on the scoring of many of his recent films, including Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Changeling, and partially scoring Gran Torino.
A Star is Born chronicles the romantic relationship between Esther, a young up-and-coming singer and Norman, an alcoholic old-and-going singer. The 2012 version will actually be the fourth remake of the film. The first version was released in 1937, followed by the 1954 version starring Judy Garland and James Mason. The film’s most recent incarnation was released in 1976, and starred Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. Beyoncé’s counterpart has not yet been cast, but Deadline mentions Will Smith as an actor under consideration for the role.
