Comedy Central Turns Twitter Feed @DadBoner Into TV Show

Popular social media character DadBoner to become cable animated series

With everyone in the cable animation business bracing to find out what the impending first time ever arrival of The Simpsons as a regular competitor for audience does to the ratings landscape, Comedy Central thinks they’ve found the next big cartoon hit… on Twitter.

The cable giant, which currently boasts South Park and reruns of Futurama in its animation stable, has ordered a pilot based on the popular Twitter feed @DadBoner. The feed, which has over 148,000 followers, recounts in first-person the exploits of Karl Welzein, a (fictional) divorced middle-aged man who loves beer, classic-rock and remaining unfailingly optimistic despite living out of his car. “Karl” has already spun the feed off into a book: Power Moves: Livin’ the American Dream USA Style.

The brainchild of L.A. comedian Mike Burns (who originally remained anonymous until being outed by an article at Deadspin), @DadBoner will not be the first Twitter feed adapted to the sitcom format: In 2010, CBS made headlines by developing a similar project based on $#*! My Dad Says as a vehicle for William Shatner. The resulting series was widely panned, and canceled after 13 episodes.
