Creators Reveal Secrets of Monkey Island in Second Remake

A telling commentary track by the original creators of Monkey Island 2 has been added to its upcoming remake.

The secrets of Monkey Island are many, but some may be revealed with the upcoming release of Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge, a remake/upgrade of the original 1991 game. Unlike the special edition of The Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2 Special Edition will include a commentary track by the game’s original, and some might say awesome, creators.

Though the track was known to be coming before, thanks to GameSpot we know it’ll feature the trio of Tim Schafer, Ron Gilbert, and Dave Grossman. All three worked on the now classic adventure game Monkey Island 2 twenty years ago and are back to share hidden thoughts and behind-the-scenes information in the commentary track.

Schafer, Gilbert, and Grossman are all onto their own new projects varying from Schafer’s Brutal Legend to Gilbert’s Deathspank to Grossman’s work at Telltale games on Sam & Max and the Tales of Monkey Island series. They’re pretty thrilled with the Monkey Island remakes, especially because they include the original games along with new HD versions.

As for what makes people consider Monkey Island 2 one of the best adventure games of all time, Schafer believes it has everything to do with: “The spitting contest,” he says. “No other game had spitting in their game, really. Maybe I’m just biased because I wired that part up. But I thought it was the best part of the game. Now that I’m thinking about it, ‘Spitting Contest’ would make a great Natal game.” Agreed on all counts.

Ron Gilbert seems to think it was due to the game’s “two hundred and fifty six color graphics” instead. Either way, those interested in more Schafer, Gilbert, and Grossman thoughts will want to play the Monkey Island 2 Special Edition when it’s released in Summer 2010.
