Electronic Arts has announced that Crysis 2, the sequel to Crytek’s hit 2007 nanosuited shooter, will be a multi-platform release.
Unlike Crysis and the follow-up Crysis Warhead, which were PC exclusives, Crysis 2 will also launch for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Last year, Crytek President Cevat Yerli blamed high levels of piracy for the company’s decision to stop developing exclusively for the PC, saying that games released on consoles “sell factors of 4-5 more.”
Announcing the game, Yerli said, “The development of Crysis 2 marks a major stepping stone for our studio. This is not only the next game in the Crysis franchise, it’s the first title we are developing for consoles and the first title being built on CryEngine 3. We are excited to have the support of EA Partners again as we work together to make the launch of Crysis 2 a huge event.”
“Nothing speaks more to the success of the EA Partners program than when a studio the caliber of Crytek continues to work with us,” added EA Partners General Manager David DeMartini. “Crytek is already one of the elite PC development studios in the world and we are excited to have the opportunity to partner with them in bringing their award-winning technology and gameplay to more platforms and a wider audience with Crysis 2.”
It’s interesting to note that Yerli also claimed last year that it would be impossible to bring the technologically advanced Crysis to consoles without major modifications. “Crysis would have to be largely changed to bring it to Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. Crysis is designed to be PC exclusive,” he said at the time.
Jordan Deam will be attending EA’s press conference later today, where the company is expected to reveal details about the game and a whole lot more, so stay tuned!
