The vampire slayer action movie has been sorely underserved in the past few years as the bloodsuckers went all anti-hero or heartthrob, but it seems like Day Shift is here to change that. The Netflix film features Jamie Foxx as a vampire hunter who has been kicked out of the vampire hunter union but is looking to get back in. It’s basically John Wick with vampires, a fact only bolstered by its director being JJ Perry, who did the stunt coordination on John Wick: Chapter 2. As you can tell from the gory Day Shift Netflix trailer, this one isn’t going too deep into vampire lore but more looking to simply kill them in incredibly violent and messed up ways.
The addition of the vampires being able to contort their bodies into any direction whatsoever should also lend to some pretty badass fight sequences, especially if Perry brings some of that John Wick magic with him. The film’s plot doesn’t seem to be too deep, but it involves Foxx playing a rule-breaking, vampire-killing dad who needs a big score in order to keep his family in LA. The only way to do that is to return to the vampire-killing union he got kicked out of, take on the “day shift,” and seemingly work with James Franco.
The Day Shift screenplay comes from Tyler Tice and Shay Hatten, the latter of whom worked on John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Again, it’s John Wick but with vampires. That was probably the entire Day Shift pitch to Netflix, to be honest. The film also stars Karla Souza, Meagan Good, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Oliver Masucci, Steve Howey, Scott Adkins, Zion Broadnax, and Snoop Dogg with a chain gun. Shaun Redick, Yvette Yates Redick, Chad Stahelski, and Jason Spitz are producing with Foxx, Datari Turner, Charles J.D. Schlissel, Peter Baxter, and Alex Young acting as executive producers.
Day Shift releases on Netflix on August 12.
