Indie darling Disco Elysium is getting its own TV show. Variety reports that developer ZA/UM is working with dj2 Entertainment to bring an adaptation of its critically acclaimed title to the small screen. No network or streaming service has signed on yet, and the teams are in the process of seeking writers for the series. However, the news should come as an exciting shock to those even slightly familiar with the game.
ZA/UM lead writer Helen Hindpere commented on the decision to bring Disco Elysium to TV: “We’re so gratified at the response Disco Elysium has received, and very happy to be teaming with dj2 to expand the franchise for other media and new audiences.”
Dmitri M. Johnson, dj2’s founder and CEO, also provided a statement, saying, “Disco Elysium is a phenomenal property with an expansive world and unlimited potential. The dj2 team is truly thrilled about this extraordinary opportunity to be part of it all.”
Johnson is continuing his trend of video game adaptations after previously working as co-producer on this year’s Sonic the Hedgehog film.
Disco Elysium originally launched for PC in 2019 as a story-driven RPG that follows a troubled detective through a murder mystery case. The game made a name for itself with its art style, unique RPG gameplay, and strong narrative. It is currently unclear how much of the game will be translated over to the show. There is also no information regarding a release timeline for the series, but expect a long wait, as the project currently sounds to be in its early stages.
Disco Elysium went on to win numerous awards across the industry, including four wins at The Game Awards 2019 and three at the BAFTAs. The game is now on track to receive console ports on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One later this year.
