Doctor Who Director Tapped to Direct and Executive Produce Amazon’s Lord of the Rings Show

The Amazon Lord of the Rings TV series has picked Doctor Who and The Wheel of Time director Wayne Che Yip as executive producer & director.

The team behind Amazon’s massive Lord of the Rings TV show just got a little bigger as television director Wayne Che Yip has joined the production as a series director and co-executive producer. Yip has directed multiple episodes of Doctor Who, two with Peter Capaldi and one with Jodie Whitaker, per iMDB. He’s also worked as a director on Amazon’s upcoming The Wheel of Time series and the Nazi-killing series Hunters. Obviously, the studio has a lot of faith in him, as he’s being tapped multiple times for some of their biggest shows. The Lord of the Rings TV series has already resumed shooting in New Zealand after delays thanks to COVID-19.

“It is a true honor to be invited into the world of Tolkien by [series creators John D. Payne & Patrick McKay] and Amazon Studios,” Wayne Che Yip said in a press release. “Every day I look forward to working with the incredible team here in New Zealand as we humbly contribute to the legacy of the greatest stories ever told.”

The upcoming series, which has already been renewed for a second season, will be Amazon’s possibly-$1-billion swing at delivering a new fantasy project that rivals Game of Thrones. The show will tell a wholly original story that hasn’t been seen on screen yet and takes place thousands of years before the Lord of the Rings books/films. The expansive cast hints at a sprawling tale that will take place all across Middle-earth during its Second Age when Sauron is first rising to power.

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series doesn’t have a release date yet.
