Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world action RPG set in and around Hogwarts in the 1800s. It was developed by Avalanche Studios, the company behind Disney Infinity, and features broomstick riding, quests with choices to make, and the ability to choose your Hogwarts house — everything a Harry Potter fan could want. But there’s one question on everyone’s minds: Does Hogwarts Legacy have multiplayer?
Hogwarts Legacy Does Not Have Multiplayer, but There Is a Silver Lining
According to the FAQ on the official Hogwarts Legacy website, the game is a single-player experience without any official multiplayer or co-op elements.
However, this hasn’t stopped fans from creating a mod for the PC version to add co-op to the game. The mod is called HogWarp, and, while it’s in early stages, it is technically playable if you back the developers’ Patreon at one of the top two tiers.
Once the mod is out of the testing phase, it will be free, and probably a lot more usable for most players. Right now, the test build appears to have major lag problems, doesn’t sync the time of day, and all that’s been publicly shown is that you can walk together, meaning it’s unclear what activities are possible in co-op on the current build.
That said, free full co-op for PC players is on its way thanks to fans, unlike the console versions, which are harder to mod. Multiplayer mods for other games haven’t made it to console due to the mix of locked down hardware and software, and proprietary online connection systems that make multiplayer modding almost impossible.
It’s also unlikely multiplayer can be added in an official update to the game, since it often presents complex technical challenges that have to be accounted for from the very start, or else cost a lot of development time and money. Warner Brothers have already sold a lot of copies, so releasing a massive update wouldn’t produce as many sales as working on a sequel.
That possible sequel could have multiplayer for both consoles and PC, but it’ll be a few years away at least. For now, PC players can enjoy watching the fan made co-op improve, and console players can contemplate buying the PC version.
