Don’t Ask Strauss Zelnick About Grand Theft Auto V

If last night’s enthusiastic “no comment” is any indication, Take-Two Chairman Strauss Zelnick may be getting just a wee bit tired of reporters asking him about Grand Theft Auto V.

Curiosity about the future of Grand Theft Auto is natural. It’s Take-Two’s premiere franchise and, wishful thinking and insistence to the contrary notwithstanding, the one on which the publisher lives or dies. With Grand Theft Auto IV well over a year old at this point, questions about what’s next are bound to arise. A word to the wise, however: This may not be the best time to ask Strauss Zelnick about it.

Zelnick’s mood may not have been ideal to begin with, given that Take-Two had just reported a 68 percent revenue decline, resulting in a $55.5 million net loss for the third quarter of the company’s fiscal year. Whatever the case, when a reporter on last night’s earnings call asked him when Grand Theft Auto V would be announced, the Take-Two Chairman was emphatic in his response.

“We’re not going to announce it,” Zelnick said. “We’re not going to announce when we’re going to announce it. And we’re not going to announce the strategy about announcing it or about when we’re going to announce it either, or about the announcement strategy surrounding the announcement of the strategy. Any other questions?”

No, Strauss, I think that pretty well covers it.
