Id Software says every one of Doom Eternal’s cosmetic items will be unlockable in-game, meaning there will not be any in-game store or microtransactions. Creative director Hugo Martin stepped in to comment on whether or not microtransactions would appear in the game on a Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal fan page, saying that Id Software has not implemented any cosmetics that can be bought with real-world currency.
It is a private group on Facebook, but you can at least check out a screenshot that was provided by Reddit user OnyxsWorkshop. Among other things, Martin says the following:
Eternal is a $60 game, not a free to play game or a mobile game – we are giving (you) a complete experience with no store just like you’d expect. Unlocking skins with XP is a part of the experience if you care about that stuff or (you) can completely ignore it and it will have no impact on your experience AT ALL and it’s all free.
Martin says the cosmetics are only there to make you look cool, having no real effect on the gameplay.
So far, publisher Bethesda has been relatively quiet regarding whether or not the game would include any microtransactions upon release, so this transparency at least clears up the issue.
Doom Eternal launches on March 20, 2020 for Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One and is estimated to be around 20-30 hours long. A Nintendo Switch release will follow.
