Can you hear that? It’s the nails being hammered into the coffin of DC Universe’s streaming aspirations. The streaming platform’s most popular show, Doom Patrol, was just renewed for season 3… on HBO Max. DC Universe and HBO Max had both hosted the second season of the series, which originally debuted on DC Universe in 2018. The renewal is incredibly great news for fans of the off-kilter superhero series that’s garnered a cult following and plenty of praise from critics. It’s bad news for anyone who thought DC Universe was still a viable streaming platform.

The Doom Patrol season 3 announcement came during DC FanDome’s second event over the weekend, along with this statement: “DC’s strangest group of heroes will be back to save the world again as HBO Max exclusively greenlights Max Original Doom Patrol for Season 3.” You’ll note that there is no mention of DC Universe and that they call the series an HBO Max original, which is clearly a lie since the show is not originally from there. Since the release, the move has been confirmed by HBO Max executives.
The announcement of the season means that the abrupt ending to season 2 will actually get resolved. The series had to stop production on its tenth and final episode of season 2 because of COVID-19 and so concluded a bit more rapidly than anyone, even the producers, expected. There’s obviously plenty of weird to experience still with the series, which also has a heart of gold that a lot of superhero content is missing.
There’s no confirmation, but if there’s a season 3, that most likely means the entire main cast will be returning. The show stars Brendan Fraser, Diane Guerrero, Joivan Wade, April Bowlby, Matt Bomer, Timothy Dalton, and Abigail Shapiro. Maybe this season we’ll even get more Alan Tudyk?
