The successfully Kickstartered Minecraft documentary is due before year’s end.
The last time you heard anything about the Minecraft documentary, it was in connection with Kickstarter donor goodies and a twenty minute clip that was circulating the internet. Now it’s close to fruition, so close in fact that director Paul Owens thinks it could be out by December 7th, 2012. Even if Owens doesn’t hit that particular date, he promises it will be out in December no matter what.
The documentary follows a year of Markus “Notch” Persson’s life from early 2011 onwards, just at the moment when Minecraft was really taking off. It was originally intended as a twenty-minute short but rapidly outgrew that format. 2 Player Productions saw that one man’s block-building game was mushrooming into a rags-to-riches tale, and vowed to tell it. One successful Kickstarter later, 2 Player had the funding it needed to make it so.
Peter Molyneux – one of many industry talking heads that feature in the documentary – at one point describes Minecraft as being “far better than a god game or any game I’ve done. For sure … It’s a fact!” And you can’t say fairer than that.
Minecraft: The Story of Mojang will be available both as a DVD and via digital download.
