Eidos Montreal Shoots Down Rumors of a New Thief Game

It sounds like that Thief game that was rumored last week might not be happening after all.

Last week, a rumor popped up that there was another Thief game in the works that would release alongside the movie. The rumor came from a post by Straight Up Films, the production company working on the Thief movie. The post read, “Widely considered to be one of the greatest games ever created, a fifth sequel is currently in development to be released in step with this motion picture adaptation.” But Eidos Montreal boss David Anfossi had spoken out, basically saying that it isn’t happening.

After Square Enix demurred, saying “We don’t have anything to announce at this time,” Anfossi took to Twitter to be a bit more blunt.

It was a bit of a surprise that Eidos would follow up on 2014’s disappointing Thief reboot so soon. Obviously there’s still a slim possibility that this could be happening, but without any further evidence, I think we can safely label this rumor as “not happening.”
