After struggling to convince viewers with the 2006 blockbuster Eragon, The Inheritance Cycle books are getting a second life on screen, this time with a Disney+ TV adaptation. Variety reports that Disney is taking a fresh stab at adapting the much-loved YA fantasy novels.
According to the report, the novels’ author, Christopher Paolini, will be involved as a co-writer on the Eragon TV show. The series will be produced by 20th Television, though other details about the writing and/or production teams are not yet available as it remains in early development.
There are four books in the novel series: Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance. The series follows a young man, Eragon, who discovers an egg, which later hatches a dragon that he names Saphira. This discovery sets in motion a chain of events that lead Eragon to becoming a Dragon Rider and bring him into conflict with the tyrannical King Galbatorix, in addition to other enemies and factions.
20th Century Fox produced the movie Eragon, which featured an impressive cast including Jeremy Irons, Rachel Weisz, and John Malkovich, but it was widely panned by critics. While the film performed modestly at the box office, it was not enough to convince 20th Century Fox to continue to adapt the novels. However, fans began to agitate for a remake following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century, which may have contributed to today’s news.
