Let’s round out this hectic week with some more video game news. Aside from yet another batch of Mass Effect Trilogy remaster rumors, we received confirmation that PlayStation 5 will include 667 GB of free space on its SSD, Square Enix apparently lost significant money on Marvel’s Avengers, Take-Two may acquire Codemasters, and more. Here’s the video game news you might’ve missed on Nov. 6, 2020.
Marvel’s Avengers Underperformed for Square Enix by a Lot
Based on Marvel’s Avengers‘ lack of players, it’s not entirely surprising that it didn’t do as well as publisher Square Enix had hoped, but what is shocking is just how much it underperformed. According to David Gibson of Astris Advisory Japan KK, Square Enix lost around 6.5 billion yen with Marvel’s Avengers, which equates to nearly $63 million. We do know the publisher plans to keep supporting the game, but it may not be enough to recoup the loss.
Square Enix – reported Yen6.5bn loss for HD Games driven by Marvel Avengers, would not say how many sold but that volumes were 60% of plan. Implies game cost over $100m to make but only sold 3m or so. Ouch
