People are desperate for action blockbusters right now with everything getting delayed, and that has led to Extraction, another stab at the genre from Netflix, landing at the exact right moment to succeed. The movie has been a massive hit for the streamer, with numbers that are on pace to make the film the biggest Netflix movie premiere ever. With that kind of success, Netflix has obviously green-lit a sequel with Joe Russo returning to write.
“The deal is closed for me to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be,” Russo told Deadline. “We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience.”
If you haven’t seen the film yet, now would be a good time to stop reading because of spoilers, but the question mark Russo is referring to is the fate of Chris Hemsworth’s character, Tyler Rake. At the end of the movie, after shooting his way across a barricaded bridge, Rake is gunned down and falls over the side, presumably dead. However, the final shot of the film left the possibility of his survival, allowing the filmmakers to move forward with his story if they want, but possibly destroying the themes of the original. There’s also a host of characters and backstory in the movie that could be explored if they do a prequel instead.
Netflix won’t start contracting with directors and actors until the screenplay is finished, but director Sam Hargrave, who has collaborated with the Russo Brothers on MCU films for a decade, is likely to return to helm the film. The same can be said of Hemsworth.
