F9 (Fast and Furious 9) Drops Super Bowl Teaser

magnets fast and furious 9 f9 teaser trailer commercial super bowl spot

There aren’t too many movies coming out anytime soon, so the film trailers landing at this year’s Super Bowl are going to be a bit more limited. But the Fast and Furious franchise is continuing a bit of a tradition with a new Super Bowl spot for Fast and Furious 9, or F9 as they’re calling it. The ad is only about 30 seconds, but it does manage to show off some new action.

Of course, F9 went through almost an entire marketing campaign already with full trailers and teasers before Universal pulled the plug and delayed it nearly a year, from May 22, 2020, to April 2, 2021. At the time it seemed odd for the film to delay that far into the future when most movies were just realigning a few months, but the decision proved prescient as F9 has only had to do a small reschedule to its current release date of May 28, 2021, instead of the multiple delays other films have seen.

The ninth film in the franchise looks like it’s going to be full of the same ridiculousness the franchise has been known for. The ad spot features a new bit of a car somehow sliding on its side through a building and into a car. The movie’s plot also seems bonkers, as “the family” returns almost in its entirety with some dead characters even somehow coming back. Dom (Vin Diesel) discovers that his brother (John Cena) is out to get him backed by returning villain Cipher (Charlize Theron), and clearly the only solution is to drive cars really fast.

The film also stars Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, and Helen Mirren. Also returning to direct is Justin Lin, who was responsible for taking the franchise from budget racing films into the over-the-top, billion-dollar franchise that it is. Missing are Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, as they’ve spun off into their own franchise, Hobbs & Shaw.
