Fallout: New Vegas 2 Reportedly in ‘Very Early Talks’ at Obsidian & Microsoft

Fallout: new vegas 2 in very early talks at microsoft from obsidian sequel development fallout

A Fallout: New Vegas sequel from Obsidian Entertainment is in “very early talks” at Microsoft, according to GamesBeat reporter Jeff Grubb in an episode of his (paywalled) Giant Bomb show, Grubbsnax (via VGC). A sequel from the developer of the original title would be a monumental development for Fallout fans longing for a return to the dry deserts of the Mojave Wasteland, but for now, Grubb says Fallout: New Vegas 2 is nothing more than an idea.

“This is very early, but people have begun to have talks and say these words in sentences, and these words are ‘Obsidian’ and ‘New Vegas 2,’” Grubb said. “We’re talking years and years away. There’s at least an interest and conversations happening about making something like that actually a reality.”

Fallout: New Vegas arrived as an official offshoot of Bethesda’s classic RPG series in 2010. Where Bethesda Game Studios handled its predecessor, Fallout 3, the spinoff’s post-apocalyptic open world — which is set around Arizona, Nevada, and California — was created entirely by Obsidian. The studio proved itself with its own entry that still remains a favorite among Fallout fans, bringing newcomers to the Mojave Wasteland for a main campaign and four narrative-driven DLC components.

Fallout: New Vegas was left as a standalone spinoff with no hope of a sequel — until Microsoft managed to acquire both Bethesda and Obsidian in 2020 and 2018 respectively. With Bethesda’s ownership of the Fallout IP and Obsidian both under the Microsoft umbrella, there’s little standing in the way of developing a Fallout: New Vegas 2.

“A lot of people at Microsoft think that this could work and there’s a lot of interest to make it happen,” Grubb said.

For now, Obsidian is hard at work on bringing its own sprawling fantasy RPG, Avowed, to Xbox fans. There’s no telling when or if we’ll see Fallout: New Vegas 2, so stay tuned for updates.
