Fan Crafts iPod Touch Pip-Boy 3000

Short of being a gadgeteering genius, this iPod Touch-based fan mod is the closest you’ll ever get to owning a real-life version of Fallout 3‘s Pip-Boy 3000.

If you were one of those eager Fallout fans who purchased the $120 Survival Edition of Fallout 3 that was an Amazon-exclusive, you might have been disappointed with the replica Pip-Boy 3000 that was the centerpiece of the package, not just because the thing is reportedly a big hunk of junk, but because it’s a clock and not a real Pip-Boy. The gadget, which figures centrally in Fallout 3‘s gameplay as a handy-dandy do-it-all device, is right up there with Captain Falcon’s car and a Portal gun when it comes to in-game doodads that should exist in real life.

Not that we could reasonably ask for a working Pip-Boy, but maybe at least one that does a little more than tell the time? Otaku Joe, a Fallout 3 fan and, uh, otaku, decided to make the most of what he had on hand to make this dream a reality. He took the Pip-Boy clock from the Survival Edition, carved out the insides, and plunked his iPod Touch (which he seems to think is made by Sony…) right in the center display.

It’s not really a complete replica – all he really does is have the iTouch display screenshots of the Pip-Boy interface which can be scrolled through so it looks like it’s the real thing, there’s no actual interactivity aside from that. You can’t inject yourself with Rad Away with this. But it does look pretty close to the real thing, and on top of that, when you play the Fallout 3 soundtrack through the iTouch speakers while using it, it’s just like listening to the radio in the game. Or you could put on “Super Freak.” That works too.
