Ubisoft Montreal revealed the new IP For Honor during the Ubisoft E3 2015 briefing Monday evening.
Update: Additional information released from Ubisoft via their blog Ubiblog.
Original Article: Creative Director Jason VandenBerghe took to the stage at the conference to talk more in depth about For Honor, a brand new IP and an interesting kicking off point for the conference.
For Honor is a hack and slash combat game set in the Middle Ages, focusing on brutal battles between three factions: vikings, knights, and samurai. The battles take place across a vast variety of expansive, and stunningly designed, levels.
Each faction has several different heroes to choose from, all with individual fighting styles – and heroes can be fully customized, with the exception of their main weapon. Knights (The Legions) fight with their gear with a focus on being “defenders,” Vikings (The Warborns) are the “fighters for freedom” and fight more aggressively, and Samurai (The Chosen) have a technique centered on focus and mastery.
The second video is a multiplayer gameplay trailer and opens with a look at 4v4 Dominion Mode, with two teams attempting to “dominate the battlefield by way of three strategic control zones.” Each team is accompanied by a massive army of AI units. The trailer includes a massive amount of actual gameplay footage, revealing a title that is brutal, lethal, and gruesome – and will feature four player co-op, an addition sure to delight players.
From Ubiblog:
“It’s a shooter… with swords.”
“For me this is just a great way to blow anywhere from 20 minutes to four hours or even twelve if I really feel like going for it,” [Vandenberghe] explains. “There are a bunch of reasons why this loop works for shooters and why it’s so enjoyable. Well, all those reasons can apply to melee combat too. But now it’s not going to be about line of sight. You’re not sprinting around trying to find cover. So it won’t be like a shooter in the micro experience, but the overall macro experience will be very familiar to fans of shooters. We even have things called Feats, which are sort of kill streak rewards. Once you gain enough points for yourself, you’ll be able to call in support attacks like catapults or arrow storms.”
“This campaign is really an invitation into our world. This is our special place. Knights and Vikings and Samurai all fighting on the same battlefield? I’m no history major, but I can tell you that never happened. But it does happen in the canon of For Honor and the campaign is your introduction to this world.”
For Honor is coming to Xbox One, PS4, and PC in 2016.
