Among a number of other major additions, word has come down from developer Turn 10 Studios that the upcoming Forza Motorsport 5 will finally add open-wheel race cars to the franchise.
As part of its effort to expand the Forza Motorsport universe, developer Turn 10 Studios has included open-wheel racers in the upcoming Forza Motorsport 5. A full list of the vehicles is not yet available, but the developer confirms that among these cars will be a 1976 McLaren M23, a 1976 Ferrari 312-2 and representative vehicles from the top IndyCar teams like Andretti Autosport, Team Penske and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.
If none of those names mean anything to you, just know that this introduces a new type of racing to the Forza franchise, and that these cars go very, very fast.
Why add open-wheeled cars? Why now? Turn 10 studio manager Alan Hartman explains:
Including open-wheel cars in Forza Motorsport 5 brings Forza fans a whole new world of racing action. Players will be able to drive these incredible cars on a collection of world-famous race circuits as well as our Prague city track, which we debuted this week at E3. In addition, the brand new graphics engine in Forza Motorsport 5, powered by the Xbox One, will let Forza players get closer than ever to these amazing cars and to really build an appreciation for these masterpieces of race engineering.
Granted, there was a lot of hyper-diplomatic marketing speak in there, but Hartman makes a good point: The Forza series has always offered players the opportunity to examine every inch of their meticulously rendered rides, and if nothing else this should be one of the few chances (virtual or real) that the average person will ever have to pore over an IndyCar. Given the quality of prior Forza titles, we have to assume that these cars will also perform quite similarly to their real-world counterparts as well, so overall this is positive news for anyone who enjoys racing pixelated cars that they could never afford in meatspace reality.
Expect Forza Motorsport 5 to debut alongside the Xbox One this November.
