Free Guy Lands New Trailer as Film Finally Nears Release Date

free guy trailer august release date ryan reynolds

Like a lot of movies that were supposed to come out last year, Free Guy has dropped more than one trailer as its release date got pushed back further and further. However, this should be close to the last one as the film, which stars Ryan Reynolds as an NPC in a video game who suddenly gains sentience, is finally set to release this August, so marketing is ramping up for it once again.

Surprisingly, this Free Guy trailer has a host of new content in it alongside a bunch of stuff we’ve already seen before. This is probably the most plot-driven one we’ve seen as we see Reynolds’ Free Guy do his best Emmet from The Lego Movie before becoming aware that he is, indeed, in some kind of multiplayer video game that’s a mix of Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite. It is an actual player, Milly / Molotov Girl (Jodie Comer), who brings him to this realization and tells him that the evil game designer (Taika Waititi) who made the game is about to destroy it. Guy goes on a quest to stop him and save his virtual world.

The film also stars Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, and Utkarsh Ambudkar and is directed by Shawn Levy, who is pretty good with turning out enjoyable movies, even if they aren’t anything particularly special. There’s also a plethora of gaming celebs in the film with cameos, including Imane “Pokimane” Anys, Lannan “LazarBeam” Eacott, Seán William “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin, Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, and Daniel “DanTDM” Middleton. See, studios are with it. They know how to appeal to the kids.

Free Guy has seen a ton of delays over the past year, with its original release date in July of last year. There were even whispers that Disney, which acquired the film in the Fox buyout, would move it to streaming instead, given its mid-market budget. However, 20th Century never moved, and now we’ll get to see it on the big screen upon its final release date of Aug. 13, 2021.
