Not everyone in a videogame can be the protagonist – you need a foil. Today we celebrate those characters that exist only to be a thorn in the good guy’s side.
Sigmund, from Runescape, wants the peaceful cave goblins to be slaughtered, and as such he seems like a good choice to start the list of monsters.
General Victor Sarrano, of Bulletstorm, does a great impersonation of Josef Stalin in his hunt for critics of his administration. The fact that he’s also a racist and a sexist makes him a perfect choice as a monster.
Spyro needs someone to fight against and Malefor is the perfect choice for that position. In The Legend of Spyro trilogy he makes a name for himself as he destroys dragon eggs and tries to destroy the world, which makes him pretty much the textbook definition of monster.
In Far Cry 3 you pretty much have your choice of monsters, but Hoyt Volker really takes the cake. He is the boss of the biggest slave-trading ring in the South Pacific. If that’s not enough he forced a group of innocents to run across an active minefield. Not only is he an innovator of Minesweeper, but the biggest and baddest monster on the island.
In the Assassin’s Creed series you come across characters that are evil, but are trying to do what they think is best for the world. Not so for Majd Addin. He’s an unrepentant murderer and does this all for fun which makes him quite the target for a Templar hunting assassin.
Lionel Starkweather, of Manhunt kidnaps the family of the protagonist, which isn’t so bad on its own, but he ultimately has a slew of psychos that do his every bidding.
No list of videogame monsters would be complete without the Joker. He’s Batman’s evil counterpart, which makes him pretty damned evil. Don’t trust this man, he will stab you in the back the first chance he gets.
If you want a monster then Minecraft has exactly what you’re looking for. This little green guy will blow you up the first chance he gets. The only warning you’ll have is an ominous hissing noise that usually ends with an explosion.
