The Global Gaming League gets competitive on the PlayStation Network.

Videogame tournament host Global Gaming League (GGL) and Sony have partnered to manage online game tournaments for PlayStation 3 titles, offering competitors use of GGL features such as real time scoring. The first game to test the service was Resistance: Fall of Man, which held its first tournament on July 7. Registration for this event launched on June 18, and within the first 10 days over 6,000 participants registered to compete. Tournaments support dual format matches of both one-on-one and three-on-three team competitions, complete with an array of prize benefits for the winners.

Game retailer GameStop is actively encouraging its community to participate in the online leagues and is lending its own promotional support. Third-party media partner GamePlay HD is partnering with leading game industry companies to offer exclusive content on the first high-definition gamer channel. Tournament finalists will be flown to New York at GamePlay HD Studios in New York City to battle it out and appear in an episode for GGL and their forthcoming new TV series covering game tournaments.

Ted Owen, Founder of GGL, said, “GGL admires the has developed a powerful offering for the video game world by bringing together consoles, game titles and the Internet with the players through its unique online and community interaction. Given our mission to help extend the gaming culture globally, this partnership with SCEA demonstrates how we can do that by combining the power of PS3, online gaming and tournaments with social networking. We want to encourage and enable further enjoyment of these outstanding game titles’ competitive features and give these PS3 players an incredible online experience in a forum that stimulates interest, involvement and enthusiasm.”

“We are excited to create tournaments for the PS3 community and provide players with the opportunity to showcase their talent online in a live, competitive environment. Teaming with GGL further validates our commitment in building outstanding experiences and providing gamers with the best possible gaming online,” added Jeff Reese, director of software marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America.
