While Pedro Pascal might be the hottest thing going right now with his recent turn in Wonder Woman 1984 and being cast as Joel in HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, another The Mandalorian star is on the outs — Gina Carano. Lucasfilm has announced that it has severed ties with Carano seemingly over her social media postings, which often spread falsehoods or made controversial statements.
“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable,” Lucasfilm said in a statement released last night.
Rumors of Gina Carano being fired from The Mandalorian had been circulating for months as the actress posted controversial statements on her social media accounts, often about wearing masks, social divides, and transphobic jokes. The hashtag #FireGinaCarano began to trend off and on with each post she put up, with her supporters using #weloveginacarano in response. It seemed like she might weather the storm, especially after apologizing for her transphobic joke and saying that Pascal had explained why it was offensive.
It’s not clear what the straw was that broke the camel’s back, but she recently shared a post on TikTok comparing the U.S. right now to Nazi Germany, saying, “Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”
Carano played bounty hunter-turned-marshall Cara Dune in The Mandalorian. The show’s second season definitely suggested that she would be returning for the third, as she’s an integral part of the Mandalorian’s posse, but her role could be phased out pretty easily as well given the conclusion of the second season put a decent cap on most of the show’s plotlines. Carano also played Angel Dust in Deadpool, which came out before Disney owned the character, but that character probably wasn’t returning anyway. What is abundantly clear is that we won’t see Carano casually leaning against any poles in the Star Wars universe any time soon.
