Sony Santa Monica Studio revealed the first full-length God of War Ragnarok trailer at the PlayStation Showcase, with follow-up interviews confirming that it will spell the end of the Norse arc of the series.
The God of War Ragnarok trailer sets up the key conflict, as Kratos and Atreus set out to prevent Ragnarök, enlisting the help of the Norse God of War, Tyr. The trailer also continues the arc from the previous game, with Kratos still trying to put his violent past behind him while forces pull him into war with Asgard.
Freya and Thor will be the primary antagonists throughout the adventure, both of them seeking vengeance against Kratos. This time, the game will allow players to explore all Nine Realms of Norse myth, with an expanded selection of enemies and combat options to give players more control.
Meanwhile, in the background, there’s been a change of leadership over the project. Cory Barlog has stepped back from his role as creative director, with series veteran Eric Williams taking over. This change continues the legacy of having a new director with each new entry, a decision that is intended to give each game “a fresh perspective.”
God of War Ragnarok has no set release date on PlayStation 5 yet.
