The Gran Turismo franchise has sold 50 million units worldwide, despite all the brouhaha over the last release not being a “full” game.
SCEA made the announcement only about a month after the launch of Gran Turismo:Prologue, which provides an array of cars and tracks that will be included in Gran Turismo 5 later in the year.
Series creator Kazunori Yamauchi said of the milestone, “Initially, Gran Turismo was an ‘alternative’ racing game, kind of an outsider in the genre, and we made it thinking that it would be OK as long as it reached out to the select few who would agree with us,” he said in a statement. “It’s simply mind-boggling that this has been repeated 50 million times all around the world in the last 10 years.”
The first title was released on the PlayStation in 1997. In more recent years it’s had competition from other games with more realistic physical vehicle damage.
Unsurprisingly, Sony said it will continue to support development of the franchise for the PS3 and on the PSP later in the year.
