The Halo TV series for Paramount+, which has been in production for quite some time, is in the process of losing its two co-showrunners. A report from Variety states that Halo showrunner Steven Kane will be leaving the series and showrunner Kyle Killen already left. Despite this setback, the show is still set to launch on Paramount+ in 2022.
The showrunners are exiting the Halo TV series for separate reasons. Killen reportedly departed production early as he “felt he was unable to render full-time showrunner duties during the show’s shoot in Budapest.” Kane took over as showrunner and will remain in that position through post-production of season 1, but he won’t return to the job should the show get renewed for a second season, as he has now been in Budapest for two years and wishes to return to the U.S.
The series has struggled to get off the ground, first being mentioned in an Xbox One reveal event in 2013. Steven Spielberg was supposed to be producing at the time and even appeared in the promotional video proclaiming his excitement at making a Halo series. However, the series summarily stalled and was eventually revived in 2018 for Showtime. Since then, news on the production has trickled out, and in the last few months, we’ve received a wealth of new information about the show (and a few leaked images).
In February, Paramount revealed that the Halo series was being launched on Paramount+, the new streaming service from ViacomCBS. (Showtime is still producing.) Of the cast revealed so far, Pablo Schreiber will play Master Chief, Natascha McElhone will play Dr. Catherine Halsey, and Jen Taylor will reprise her role as Cortana. Also in the cast are David Sapani as Captain Jacob Keyes, Olive Gray as his daughter, Dr. Miranda Keyes, Charlie Murphy as Makee, and Bokeem Woodbine as Soren-066. The series is being directed by Otto Bathurst.
