The game’s creator says the planned DLC release has grown into a full sized game.
Hotline Miami is described by the developer as a “top down f*ck ’em up”, marrying a slick soundtrack with a bit of the ol’ ultraviolence in a retro setting. Creator Jonatan Söderström originally intended to make some DLC for the top down action title, but that DLC has now evolved into a sequel.
Söderström mentions the next game on his Twitter account:
Working while listening to the sweet tunes of a preliminary Hotline Miami 2 soundtrack that we’ve put together during the weekend.— Jonatan Söderström (@cactusquid) November 26, 2012
The developer originally planned for Hotline Miami‘s DLC to be “about as long as the full game”, but he explained that the scope of the expansion was greater than expected. “It seems like it will end up bigger (in terms of the number of levels we’ve got planned) than the first, so it feels reasonable to release it as a full game rather than a DLC.
“We’ve barely begun working on it though,” he clarified. “Still got things we need to patch with the first game, so that’s the main priority right now.”
A notable feature in the first game was the surreal track list, featuring songs from nine composers. At this point, Söderström still hasn’t finalized any music artists for the sequel, despite mentioning a “soundtrack” in his earlier tweet. “Music wise I’m not sure for the second game yet,” he said. “Looks like a couple of them might do more tracks for the sequel, but we’ve been looking at some other bands as well. Want to keep it fresh.”
