So, it turns out I’ve been playing Starfield wrong all this time. Stealing is all the rave. In fact, many players have gone on the internet, from Reddit to posting YouTube videos, to show how to steal in Starfield easily and get away with it every time scot-free. Here’s what they do.

How to Steal Without Getting Noticed in Starfield

The art of stealing in Starfield is relatively simple. I’d only recommend scooping up someone’s goods when they’re not detecting you to avoid getting caught, which saves you from dealing with the authorities and getting a bounty on your head. Skills such as Stealth and Theft lean into the head-cannon fantasy of being a kleptomaniac space captain, yet sometimes, doing the dirty work yourself isn’t always the best option.

For instance, one player on Reddit discovered they could manipulate an NPC to jimmy open restricted locked containers and steal the goods without any trouble.

According to fans on the thread, the perk used to do this is called Manipulation, and others – like Diplomacy and Instigation – can also influence NPCs. One user on the page also explained a main questline in Neon will give you an implant that allows you to manipulate NPCs, saying the feature basically works “literally [like] Jedi mind tricks.”

“Best way to steal shit without being seen is to make others do it for you,” joked another poster, and they’re definitely right. Players hoping to steal lots of stuff across the universe should consider perks like Manipulation to get NPCs to do most of the heavy lifting. Most figured this out much later in their playthrough, but if you’re just starting a run, having this knowledge may save you from getting reported to the space cops.
