ICO Creator Drops Hints, Risks Life

Putting himself at risk of “being shot” by his Sony handlers, ICO and Shadow of the Colossus creator Fumito Ueda dropped some major hints about his next project during a panel at GDC 09 today.

Even though the panel didn’t exactly have anything to do with new games, the panelists of GDC’s “Evolving Game Design” session – Bethesda’s Emil Pagliarulo, Grasshopper’s Goichi “Suda51” Suda and Sony’s Fumito Ueda – did actually end up spilling a few beans in regards to what they’ve got in the works.

Suda 51’s working on a horror game with Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, which will be published by Electronic Arts. Pagliarulo, meanwhile, is plugging away at Fallout 3 DLC. Enough about those guys, though. What about Ueda?

Though he has been tight-lipped about what his Team ICO squad has been working on, Ueda was surprisingly forthcoming at the panel. “The Japan studio bosses are probably here so I can’t say anything specific,” Ueda began. “But it might be something similar to what’s been done. Kind of a middle ground…”

So, a middle ground between ICO and Shadow of the Colossus? Moderator Mark MacDonald prodded Ueda for more specifics, to which the designer replied: “Well, probably it will be similar to the past… we are struggling. The essence of the game is rather close to Ico.” A game close in “essence” to ICO? Good. That the team is “struggling?” Bad. Will we never know what this game is, or if it’s even going to come out?

Suda proceeded to ask for more details, but Ueda hesitated. “I can’t talk about this anymore,” he said. “Don’t ask anymore questions please! As soon as I start talking they are going to shoot me.”

Wouldn’t want him to get shot, or else the game would definitely never come out.
