When Cory and I decided to declare our solidarity with the staff of Charlie Hebdo and every other satirist, essayist, journalist and cartoonist who stands or stood for free expression, I assumed I’d have something to say by the time Cory had finished the drawing. Other cartoonists certainly seem to. There’s a lot of self-aggrandizing cartoons floating around Twitter, all depicting resilient satirists responding to violence with a brave face and rapier wit. There’s a great deal of weaponized pencils.
I see where the sentiment comes from. We are hurt by this act of barbarism and, even though we consider ourselves so jaded, we’re also a little surprised. Twelve people are dead because some idiots got mad a cartoon. How ridiculous is that? How do you even begin to make fun of minds so barren and awful as that?
