We’re one step closer to figuring out what the hell the sequel to Joker is going to be as Warner Bros. has announced that the movie will release on October 4, 2024. The film, titled Joker: Folie À Deux, is a sequel to a movie that really didn’t need one, has slowly become the butt of jokes, and may turn out to be a musical co-starring Lady Gaga. You can see why we’re not sure what’s coming.
The Joker: Folie À Deux release date makes sense. WB had already put a pin in that weekend for a major DC release, and now we know which one. October was also very good to the first film, which became not only the highest grossing R-rated film of all time but also had the highest October domestic opening ever. It makes sense it’d want to copy that success.
Whether or not they’ll be able to is another question. The film, which netted two Oscars, has lost a lot of its luster since its release, with its biggest lasting staple being a meme about living in a society. It’s not even clear if Joaquin Phoenix is officially signed on to return as the Joker. (Update: Phoenix and Gaga appeared to be confirmed now.) They’ll have to actually make a point this time around to pull audiences back in — or at least write some really catchy songs about how society is a thing that we live in.
Meanwhile, Batgirl is still dead, The Flash is currently still alive, and everything is kind of a mess at Warner Bros. Discovery.
