Get ready to return, yet again, to a dinosaur-filled theme park where everything is going to go wrong… except this time it’s animated! Netflix has released the first full trailer, after a tease earlier in the year, for its animated, youth-oriented Jurassic World spin-off show, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. Alongside the new trailer and first-look images, the streamer also announced that the eight-episode series would stomp onto our TV screens on Sept. 18.
Just how is another group of people, this time six teenagers, stuck on an island with a bunch of rampaging dinosaurs? They’re on the opposite side of Isla Nublar, the fictional island where the first Jurassic World film took place. When all hell breaks loose, the teens appear to be left on their own to escape, but Netflix is hinting at something more to the storyline in its plot description, saying “six teens will go from strangers to friends to family as they band together to survive the dinosaurs and uncover hidden secrets so deep they threaten the world itself.”
The Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous trailer is jam-packed full of references to the film series, including the classic score opening up and a variety of shots ripped directly from the films themselves. If you’re getting some Trollhunters vibes from the trailer, it’s probably because it’s another collaboration between DreamWorks Animation and Netflix. The cast includes Paul-Mikél Williams as Darius, Jenna Ortega as Brooklynn, Ryan Potter as Kenji, Raini Rodriguez as Sammy, Sean Giambrone as Ben, Kausar Mohammed as Yaz, Jameela Jamil as Roxie, and Glen Powell as Dave.
The Jurassic franchise is expanding rapidly despite Jurassic World: Dominion‘s production being delayed due to coronavirus. That film is said not to be an ending to the series but the “start of a new era.” With Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous backfilling lore, much like Star Wars: The Clone Wars did, it seems Universal is taking its first crack at establishing a cinematic universe.
