Lara Croft Returns in Mysterious New Title

Crystal Dynamics announced Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light today, the next game to star the world’s bustiest tomb raider.

Crystal Dynamics was somewhat cryptic today with the announcement of the next game in the Tomb Raider series: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. That is, if it turns out to be a Tomb Raider game at all, because the title makes no mention of the burial facilities Lara Croft has typically plundered her way through in the past.

Darrell Gallagher, General Manager of Crystal Dynamics, said in the game’s press release: “Lara Croft is such an iconic character in videogames, with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light we have created what we believe is a truly original digital experience.” Normally, quotes in press releases are carefully chosen statements meant to fill up the internet’s news postings to positively hype a game. What Gallagher means by “a truly original digital experience” could be such hype, or it could imply that Crystal Dynamics has done something new with the upcoming Lara Croft adventure. Aside from the quote, no gameplay details have been divulged yet.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is going to be distributed digitally, likely through PSN, XBLA, or WiiWare, but no specific platforms have been mentioned for the title yet. The only information we have is that it’s scheduled for release in 2010.

The game’s official website, found here, features a logo that looks like something the Harry Potter series would use. More information on Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will likely come out of the Game Developer’s Conference, which takes place from March 9-13, as Crystal Dynamics said it’ll be showing the title “strictly behind closed doors” at the event. For now, the game is a mystery, stemming both from the Tomb Raider-less title and the complete lack of actual details. For all we know, it could use Natal, or play nothing like the previous Tomb Raider games at all.
