Last Stop is a sci-fi adventure game by Variable State. You play as Donna, Meena, and John, three people who are all experiencing the influences of an otherworldly force, though it’s not always immediately clear how. They each live in the same area, allowing overlapping characters and locations to build a stronger bond among the three, despite them not knowing each other. Some information introduces the possibility of a greater connection between the stories, but it mostly ends up just feeling like coincidence.
Each character has one chapter per section, and you must complete all three chapters before moving on to the next section, though you can play the chapters in any order. As a whole, the story is engaging and unique, but one out of the three in each section often lacks gripping story beats. It rotates which one feels less meaningful, as if each story could have been a chapter or two shorter.
While aspects of the game lack closure and its six-hour runtime sags in spots, the majority of the story is engaging and enjoyable. If you’re into story-driven games and don’t mind limited interactions, or you prefer story-focused games with simple and forgiving controls, Last Stop has moments of depth mixed in with mediocrity.
Last Stop is available now for $24.99 on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
