LittleBigPlanet’s Sackboy Turns Toy

Built Tonka tough as opposed to huggable soft, the face of LittleBigPlanet trades in the threads for plastic shells.

What’s the best thing about the PlayStation 3 exclusive, LittleBigPlanet? The customizable levels? Stephen Fry’s great voice work? The legendary creature, Penisaurus Dix? Of course not. It’s Sackboy, the lovable do-it-yourself mascot character that is Sony’s best option for mascot gold since it taught a puppy how to rap. While some folks have already created some adorable Sackboys of their own, not everyone is as handy with a needle and thread.

Which is why Sony has teamed up with toy developer and manufacturer, Mezco Toyz, best known for its line of horror-based figures, to create action figures based on Media Molecule’s LittleBigPlanet star. An assortment of the 4″ scale Sackpeople will be making their debut at 2009’s International Toy Fair, to be held in New York, February 15-18. The figures will be available at mass market retailers and in a variety of sizes, styles, retailer exclusives and limited-edition variants. The toy snob in me is a bit turned off at the idea of mass market production, as that typically means plastic, as opposed to vinyl figures, but who am I kidding. Sackboy is cute no matter what material he’s cast out of.

For those hoping for something a bit more huggable, Sony is once again hinting that the “highly sought after, officially licensed SackBoy plushies are on their way,” though that announcement will have to come at a later time.
