Francois Dourle uses his iPhone to add scenes from movie and television to real life.
We’ve all had that moment. You know the one I’m talking about. You’ll be walking around, minding your own business when you stumble across some random thing that reminds you of some memorable moment from a favorite movie or TV show. For most people, these instances are fleeting. You smile for a little bit and then your mind moves on to something else. For history professor Francois Dourle however, these everyday flights of fantasy became an opportunity to create clever combinations of reality and fiction.
Using his iPhone, Dourle has made a hobby of injecting iconic scenes from films and television into real world locations and situations. Despite drawing on famous properties including Spider-Man, The Lion King, Thor and more, Dourle’s pictures have relatively humble origins. “Wanting to make a joke with friends, I replaced a statue of Napoleon in Cherbourg with a picture of My Little Pony and took a picture,” he explained. “I had so much fun that I put it on Facebook [and] people immediately liked it.” Beginning there, Dourle’s pictures blew up and now encompass an entire series of mash-up photos.
Looking at the overall body of Dourle’s work, it’s not hard to see why so many people like them. In addition to having a sharp eye for good mash-ups, it really looks like he takes his time making sure everything lines up as perfectly as possible. I think about trying to do the same thing myself and all I can imagine are my hands twitching around with their usual buffoon-like clumsiness. We’ve posted some of Dourle’s work below. Take a look, let us know what you think, and, if you like them, check out the rest of his pictures at his personal website.
