Marvel’s Avengers players on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 will exclusively receive Spider-Man as a playable character in early 2021. Crystal Dynamics Associate Art Director Jeff Adams announced the platform-specific content in a PlayStation.Blog post today. It is unclear if the hero will ever come to Xbox consoles or if Microsoft users are getting their own exclusive content.
Spider-Man will be available at no additional cost to owners of the game when he comes to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 next year. When he launches, he’ll be accompanied by “an in-game event that will introduce him to the wider world of Marvel’s Avengers.” The event will see players learning to use the character through a series of specific challenges unique to Spider-Man. Crystal Dynamics also confirms that, of course, Spidey will be able to sport his own array of fun costumes and gameplay experience options, so here’s to hoping the Marvel’s Spider-Man outfit will be unlockable.
Crystal Dynamics spent some time talking about how Spider-Man will feel to play in Marvel’s Avengers, saying that his gameplay style will see him taking advantage of technology that can affect things such as his web-shooters. Additionally, swinging on webs is promised to feel “graceful and light,” with different configurations allowing players to enhance traversal. And as far as the character’s in-game look goes, Adams said the influence of artists Steve Ditko, John Romita Sr., and other acclaimed talents will be apparent.
The latest Marvel’s Avengers War Table presentation went over the game’s beta, which is set to kick off on PlayStation 4 during the weekend of Aug. 7-9. The War Table showcase also announced the addition of Hawkeye, who will join the hero roster as the first post-launch character.
Marvel’s Avengers launches Sept. 4 for Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. A PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X launch is still set for later this year, with free upgrades coming to those who purchase the game on current-gen consoles.
