Marvel Television, the less famous little sibling of Marvel Studios, has had a pretty good run with Hulu over the years. But it seems the studio and the streamer can’t come together on a new Ghost Rider series starring Gabriel Luna, and Hulu has decided to not move forward with it.
Ghost Rider was going to spin-off of Luna’s turn as the character in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and be part of three-to-four shows that were going to make up what Marvel TV was calling an Adventure into Fear mini-universe within the larger MCU — think along the lines of what they set up with The Defenders at Netflix. Now that seems to all be up in the air as the Ghost Rider creative team and Hulu couldn’t get past a creative impasse and the streamer decided to drop the show. Helstrom, the other show confirmed for the Adventures into Fear universe, is still a go, however, so it’s possible they’re still planning to proceed with their little horror corner of the MCU, just without a leather-clad, flaming skull anti-hero involved.
The cancellation also most likely won’t affect any of the other Hulu/Marvel efforts, including the successful Marvel’s Runaways and the animated mini-universe that is being set up with Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K, Marvel’s Hit-Monkey, Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show, and Marvel’s Howard the Duck. Barring more cancellation news, this shouldn’t be seen as a souring of the relationship between the two companies like we saw with Netflix, especially since they’re both owned by Disney.
As for Ghost Rider, the series could still be shopped around to other platforms, but there’s no word of that happening yet. It would also be trickier to involve the character in the shared universe that was planned if he’s on a different network, though not impossible.
