Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is full of surprises, from heel-face turns through to slimy things from space, and there’s even a Goonies reference in the game.
If you’ve not seen The Goonies (and if not, why not?), it’s a brilliant and heartwarming ’80s movie (written by Steven Spielberg) about a bunch of kids who go looking for pirate treasure. The chief antagonists of the movie are the Fratellis, a trio of comedy gangsters who pursue the children.
There’s a fourth Fratelli, Sloth who, locked away by his mother and brothers, ends befriending the kids. And it’s his distinctive cry of “Hey You Guys!” you can hear while swinging around Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
No, we’re absolutely not making this up. There’s a tribute to Black Panther in the game, alongside a handful of other Easter eggs. But a reference to The Goonies? We’d never in a million years have expected that to crop up in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

It’s not, as far as we can tell, an actual sample from the movie. That would throw up all sorts of copyright issues. But it uses the exact intonation that Sloth did as he arrived to rescue his new friends.
So how do you get to experience this chunk of ’80s nostalgia? It appears to be entirely random, so it’s just a case of listening out. We encountered it outside in New York but we’ve seen another player get it wandering around indoors as plain clothes Peter Parker.
If you’ve not seen The Goonies, you can watch it on Amazon Prime Video, and marvel that Mikey’s older brother grew up to be Thanos.
